CHINA OPEN: RAFA IS THROUGH TO SECOND ROUND
Beijing, September 6, 2009
Rafa Nadal needed 2 hour and 10 minutes to book a ticket into the second round of the China Open after beating Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 .
"A tough match, for sure," Rafa said in his post-match press conference. "He’s always a very dangerous player."
"I think I didn’t play my best tennis. That’s true. But I improved in the third a lot," continued the champ. "The victory is important for me because, Marcos is a very good opponent, and in a tournament like this, every opponent is very tough. We are playing some of the top 45 players in the world, so every match is going to be very difficult".
The hard-hitting baseliners remained even throughout much of the match, delighting the crowd with long rallies and hitting amazing angles with their ground strokes.
Rafa got the upper hand by taking the first set, but the Cypriot, -wasting no time- bounced right back to take the second.
At 4-4 in the third set, the world No.2 pounced, breaking Baghdatis and then serving out the match, exulting when he finally won.
Rafa’s next opponent is American James Blake (No. 24), who he’s defeated in 2 out of the 5 times they’ve played in the past. Their last encounter was at last year’s Miami Masters Series quarterfinal round, which Rafa won in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Vamos Rafa!
