Nadal to receive no seeding advantage at French Open

Rafael Nadal will not be protected with a higher seeding at the French Open, which begins on May 26.
The current French champion and seven-time winner has slipped to fifth in the world rankings, mainly due to his seven-month absence with a knee injury.
Roland Garros committee member Guy Forget had suggested the Spanish king of clay should get a higher seeding — as sometimes occurs at Wimbledon — to avoid a potential quarter-final clash with world No 1 Novak Djokovic.

Forget said: ‘Considering what Nadal represents in Paris, namely the best player in the tournament’s history, it seemed incongruous that he arrives in Paris with the No 4 or 5 bib.’
But tournament director Gilbert Ysern told sports paper L’Equipe he backed off because the move had not been welcomed.
‘It was said to be fiddling,’ he added.
‘What was supposed to be a strong symbol, a tribute, was seen as messy business.’
