Police have recovered a £240,000 watch stolen from Rafael Nadal at the hotel where he stayed during the French Open and arrested a hotel employee.
The jewel-encrusted timepiece had been lent to Nadal
by luxury watchmaker Richard Mille for the French Open. But when he awoke in
the five-star hotel in the chic eighth arrondissement on Tuesday morning, it
had vanished.
Police suspected an inside job as the hotel suite showed no signs of forced
entry, and only Nadal's parents and girlfriend had access.
They later foiled the thief, a 38-year old hotel barman, after identifying him
via his magnetic key card, which was used to access the room in which Nadal
stayed.
A police source said the man confessed to having let himself in and taken the
luxury watch, and brought detectives to the grassy spot where he had hidden
it along a railway track near his home in the Essonne area south of Paris.
Nadal won
at Roland Garros for a record seventh time on Monday, beating world
number one Novak Djokovic.
