Was it early tournament scouting or was it just for kicks? Whatever his reason, Rafael Nadal gave Chinese fans a rare sight on Wednesday, sitting in the stands for a professional tennis match. The World No. 1 watched on as longtime rival Roger Federer defeated Italian Andreas Seppi in the second round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

“It’s special,” said Nadal. “I had an opportunity today to watch a few games like a spectator in life. I enjoyed it.”

The Spaniard, seeking his first title at this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event, found himself with free time on Wednesday. “I watched [Federer] because I arrived early and I already practised. I didn’t know what else to do. I went on court to watch a player like Roger, which I always enjoy doing.”

Nadal shared that he seldom has the opportunity to follow a match from the stands. “I cannot go on court most of the time because of the crowd,” said Nadal. “I disturb the players if I go [into the stands].”

The 26 year old, who won his opening match against Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, is slated to battle Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in the third round.
