RAFA, SERGIO GARCIA AND FRIENDS

Mallorca, 22 of October, 2009

Yesterday afternoon, Rafa Nadal was the most wanted "player" at the ‘Club de Campo del Mediterráneo’ in Spain.

The world number 2 participated in the Pro-Am Castello Masters Golf tournament where he teamed up with his good friend Sergio García, Alfredo Castelló and Tomeu Salva (Rafa’s best friend) for a day of laughter and jokes.

"Golf is one of my hobbies, and to play alongside Sergio García and my close friends is very nice, many thanks to Sergio for his invitation”, said Rafa at the event.

“As a golfer, practically everything that Sergio does makes me envious. Even the first time I played with him he left me amazed”, continued the champ before talking about his plans for the next couple of weeks: “I have to play in Paris next, then London and the Davis Cup, so this week I'll be training”.

BARCELONA HONOURS RAFA

Rafa was getting over the shock of Real Madrid's 3-2 Champions League loss to AC Milan by accepting a tennis honour from the Barcelona club where he has ruled the clay.

Rafa was being feted by the venerable Real Club de Tenis Barcelona 1899, which awarded the unprecedented five-time tournament winner an actual trophy of his own.

No replica involved for Spain's best, with officials saying that anyone who had claimed the honour five times on the trot deserved his own personal trophy.

He is next set to play at the Paris Masters is jut over a fortnight before the London World Tour Finals and a Davis Cup final in Barcelona against the Czech Republic December 4-6.

Vamos Rafa!

Rafael Nadal

SHANGHAI, CHINA

N. DAVYDENKO/R. Nadal
7-6, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You said yesterday you're very happy to make the final. It's a good achievement for you. How do you feel now?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, happy too, no? So I don't know if this is working well, but, yeah, I think, sure. I don't like to lose, but I had my chance. He beat me. He played very good match. Just congratulate him, because he deserve the victory, no?
I have my chance in the first set and I am especially happy with one thing: Is the first match after my injury comeback against one top player. I was competing 100% of my conditions, and I was competing. I really felt I really have chances to win.
So that's the first time, and that's the most positive thing for me, and I fight all the time with positive attitude, no physical problems. So that's very good news for me.
Very good Asian tour, Asian season for me, no? Semifinals Beijing, final here. Just happy for everything. Sure, I would love to -- I would like to win here, but the tournament is very positive, and I gonna continue working like this to try to continue in this way, no?
I am playing much better, am moving much better on court, and it's still working like this.

Q. How difficult is it to hit winners against Nikolay?
RAFAEL NADAL: He play all the time inside the court, very aggressive. He had -- he didn't had a lot of mistakes, no? Just playing well from both sides. Just for few moments in the first set he had few mistakes with the forehand.
But was difficult, no? It was difficult to have winners, because he, since the first ball, he push you back, no? So I think I did well. I played well. I played a good match. You know, I think I needed a little bit more be calm in this moment, but to have this calm I need to play with -- well, I don't know what the word is right, but with the calm of if you win tournament before or you play with more calm these important moments, no? So that's the only thing that I need right now, and this match works very well for me, no?

Q. Is he a little bit underrated? People don't really think of him that much, you know. They know he's in the top 10, but nobody talks about his game and whatever. Do people not give him enough credit for the player he is?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don't know. He had five Masters in a row, Masters Cup? So for last five years he was in the top five.
Yeah, probably he's a guy, well, calm guy. Doesn't show no emotions sometimes. So, yeah, the people probably don't talk a lot about him, but the players, we know how good is Nikolay, no? And when he's playing his best level, he's very difficult to play against him.
He play -- he has all the shots from the baseline. He has all the shots. He play inside the court, and, yeah, he's very difficult to play. It's very difficult to play against him. Just congratulate him. He did very well, and with this victory probably he's closer to be in London. That's it, no?

Q. It was the same story that it was last year in Miami?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, completely different.

Q. Completely different?
RAFAEL NADAL: Sure. In Miami I played really bad. No, that tournament in Miami I played really bad. He didn't play the same like today. He played worse. That's my feeling.
No, no. I was completing much better this year, today, than what I did in Miami last year final, no? Is completely different, my opinion.

Q. Are you surprised that he hasn't won a Grand Slam yet? Because with the type -- you say he has all the shots. How come he hasn't won a Grand Slam?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I am not surprised. He can do it, but, you know, how difficult is winning Grand Slam, no?

Q. I don't know. (laughter.)
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I know. You don't know; I know.

Q. In your mind, do you have an idea of when you expect to be playing at your absolute best with calm?
RAFAEL NADAL: That's impossible to say, no? I just can say I gonna work hard to be at my best as soon as possible, and I am not seeing myself very far of that.
But I am playing hardcourts and doing well. But at the same time, I have more titles and more wins when I play on clay, so in this season is in hard, the hardcourts, and I am doing very good end of the season.
But seems like is not enough, because I didn't play for a while during the middle of the season and seemed like I need more. But if you compare the results of the last years, semifinals of Cincinnati. This is only my second time to play semifinal in Cincinnati in my career. I played semifinals in US Open. I only did last year. The years before I never did. And I played final here. Last year I played semifinals in Madrid, if we compare, no? And two years ago I played quarterfinals and another time quarterfinals.
No, the results is I'm doing well, no? I'm doing one of the best end of the seasons in my life. But, yeah, I happy for that. I would love to have a title, but if I am still playing like this in Paris and London, it's difficult, sure. The best players are there. But in Paris I expect to have another chance to play a good tournament, no?
And if you are there all the time semifinals, final, you gonna win. I don't know when, but you're gonna win.

Q. I just wondered against a player like Nikolay, I think you played one dropshot today. Is he a very tough player to play that shot against, especially?
RAFAEL NADAL: Almost impossible, because he's inside the court all the time, so you can play dropshot when you are attacking, so you are -- if you are defending almost all the time, it's impossible to play dropshots, no?
Probably the only thing what I can improve it more today, no? I change it but late. I change it -- in the 5-2 I played a very good game with my serve, attack, having very good forehands. But, yeah, to do that all the time, I need a little bit more confidence and a little bit more matches at this level.
But I compete. I was competing all the time at very good level, trying to find solutions all the time, and I did well, but he did a little bit better than me.

Q. Your quarterfinal and semifinal your opponent retired in a row. Do you think it's part of reason you lose this match today? Because you are not --
RAFAEL NADAL: No.

Q. -- physically and mentally warmed up?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, sure not.

Q. Yesterday after losing the semifinal, Novak just give us three-minutes press conference after three-hours tennis, actually, because he tends to give one-sentence answer to every question. But you always handle loss very well, including press conference, which we really appreciate. My question is we all know how win means to players, but could you tell us what lose means to you?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, every lose is different, and every moment is completely different. So the important thing is, in my opinion, is when you go on court, you have to know you can win and you can lose. So if you know that before the match, is easier to accept that after both things, no?
The thing is you must accept the victories with the same calm than the losers. So if you win, you win, you are more happy, you feel you are the best of the world. You think something like this is where this is gonna be more difficult to be there and still winning more time. And if you lose, anyway, you can be angry or doesn't matter, but everyone has different character, and that's part of the character.
So for me today is a lose but is a positive lose. Sometimes I have a negative lose. I never was very angry, no?
But, no, that's character, and I know I can lose every match and I can win every match. Later you be here, and that's part of the work, and happy to be here and happy to be in the tour, to be playing, you know, another time with no problems. Just thinking about tennis, so that's very good news for me. I expect to be here for a long time I play without problems for a few more years.

Rafael Nadal

SHANGHAI, CHINA

R. NADAL/F. Lopez
6-1, 3-0 Ret.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. How does it feel the second night in a row to see your opponent retire?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, that's the sport, and sure, I'm sorry for both of players, especially for the last one because he's a close friend of mine, and, well, seems like it's not very important, so that's good. I just can wish him and expect a fast recovery for him, no?
Yeah, I was -- I was playing well, not bad today. Sure, after he told me he had the problem at the last point of the first set, so, yeah, I can't say more, no? But I'm in the finals, so that's really important and really good news for me. It's my first final after my comeback after the injuries.
So it's a very good result for me, and I'm very happy, and I gonna try my best tomorrow to try to play my best tennis and have chances to win.

Q. Can you look ahead to Nikolay Davydenko for us?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, he's playing very well. I saw his match today against Novak, and he did unbelievable, playing with a lot of rhythm, playing unbelievable winners and very good points at -- yeah, very, a lot of intensity.
So it gonna be a really tough match, so I will play my best without having mistakes. I gonna really have chances to win, no? If not, gonna be impossible. I know that.

Q. Do you feel like you're getting better every time you step on the court again? I mean, I know obviously you're playing at a very high level, anyway. But do you feel every time you step out onto the court, you're back into the old rhythm again kind of thing?
RAFAEL NADAL: Can you...
THE MODERATOR: He's asking about the more and more that you're playing, do you think that you're getting your rhythm and your game back?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, you know, I say every day the same. Every week it's really important for me, every week victory improves, improves my confidence, and that's another important result in the final.
So, sure, if I win tomorrow, gonna be important change for me. I don't know if I am in my best rhythm right now, but I saw the results, and the results are doing well, so that's the good news.

Q. So far there are so many injuries, and with yours in this event, how do you think about that? And do you think it is normal?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, that's a lot of coincidence, no? That's a lot of coincidence, because sometimes can happen but that's too much this week, no?
But that's the sport and sometimes can happen. But it's really strange, really strange what happen this tournament.

Q. I'm from New Zealand but I'll try to be clear for you. There's a lot of pressure and expectation on your shoulders all the time. Everybody expects you to win every match every week. How do you live with this pressure, this expectation?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think it's nothing new for me, no? So finally everybody can talk a lot and everybody can say a lot of things, but important thing is yourself. So it's sometimes for the players and for the people playing the semifinals is not a good result, but I know how difficult is do what I did the last five years, and, you know, how tough and how good you have to be playing physically and mentally. Must be, if you want to win three or six titles and winning few Grand Slams and 50 Masters Series.
So the pressure is there all the time, but in this sport it's impossible live without the pressure, no? Because you play every week. Every week you must do that until you want to be in the top, and if you're not ready every week, it's impossible, because there is one calendar, a lot of tournaments, and the system of the ranking don't give you a lot of chances, no?
So if you are good, you can be in the top. If you are not all the time playing well or all the time focus, or sure, accept this pressure is impossible be in the top positions.
I think I accept it all the time, all my life, well. And for sure when you are playing worse, you lose. When you playing win, you have more chances to win. And sure, now when you come back after the injury and you really don't know exactly how you are playing or you are in more rhythm, the pressure is there, but, you know, only way to change that is working, working hard every day, playing your best every match, practicing with positive attitude and playing with positive attitude, no? Trying to move on court when you are nervous and that's it.

Q. You must feel quite relieved. Our No. 1 seeded player is in the finals because of the two retirement in a row. Is it an advantage or disadvantage in your opinion?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, doesn't matter, yeah. That's my opinion.

Q. You have played two short games. The last two matches were short. And Nikolay Davydenko played a three-hour game today. How important do you think it will be, tomorrow's game?
RAFAEL NADAL: We are ready to compete three hours and to play the next day, no? I think that's not going to be a problem for Nikolay, especially because he's very good fit, no? And I think it's more advantage than disadvantage, no?
Because win a match like he did today is very good for him and a lot of confidence for him. Sure, he finish the match playing really well and he gonna be with big confidence right now, no?

Q. He described you as a more defensive player than González or Djokovic. Should we expect a very defensive game tomorrow?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don't think I am more defensive than -- well, probably, yeah, than Djokovic but not González, no? González have a big forehand, but with the backhand he play defensive all the time. But anyway, doesn't matter the comparison, no? Defensive or attacking, I gonna try my best, you know.
If I have the chance to attack, I gonna attack. If I feel well to attack, I gonna attack. If not, I gonna defense. I gonna do all in my hands to try to win.
If I think the way to win is defense, I go defense. And if I think the way is attack, I gonna attack. So, you know, the sport is not an automatic thing, no?

Q. After the difficulties you have had this year, and particularly with your knees earlier in the year, have you thought yet about the schedule for next year? And have your doctors advised you what sort of schedule you should play next year?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, if you give me -- I don't know, no? But you see different options to do or not? Because I don't see. You know, the way can't change a lot. This is all the -- you can do it different things.
If you want to only play the four Slams and Masters Series or try to be ready to compete to be in the top positions and try to be ready to compete well in these tournaments, no, I had problems this year, but remember, for the last five years I had big results in a lot of important tournaments.
And the calendar -- probably all in 2005 I played more than usual the rest of the players, but if you analyze my calendar this year, I play one tournament to prepare Australia, I played only in Rotterdam, and I played Indian Wells, Miami, and I played Masters Series in clay, including Barcelona. And Barcelona, for me, is -- I have to play Barcelona, you know. (laughter.)
No, but that's true, no? It's a 500 on clay. It's the only one what I can play on clay. This is not another option to do, no? Later I can play in Roland Garros, one week on grass to prepare Wimbledon, and later, yes, I have one month out to prepare, you know, the time, from the time in Cincinnati and US Open.
That's the schedule. And that's the calendar. That's not my schedule. That's obligatory calendar if you want to be ready in the big tournaments, no? That's my feeling. I don't see another options for -- that's what I -- that's what I gonna try to do.

Shanghai 2009 Final Highlights

Shanghai 2009 Nadal Saturday Interview

DAVYDENKO "PLAYED BETTER THAN ME"

Shanghai, October 18, 2009

Rafa’s run at the Shanghai Masters Series Tournament has ended without the title after a straight set loss, 7-6(3), 6-3 to Russian Nikolay Davydenko this afternoon (in China).

After two hours of play, Rafa tried the best he could against Davydenko but it was clear he was struggling with his serve and soon went down an early break.

He restored parity as a close-fought first set went to a tie-break which the world number eight, whose tactics were spot-on against Rafa, won with confidence.

The nerveless Russian broke again in the second set to establish control and served out the match at the first opportunity, securing the Masters title.

"Davydenko played better than me, that's tennis. I hope to come back and win next time," said Rafa during the trophy ceremony, half happy for having reached the final, and a bit upset for not winning.

The champ will travel back home to Mallorca tonight where he will prepare for the end of the season.

Nadal: "Chaque semaine importe"

(AFP) – Il y a 3 heures

Rafael Nadal

SHANGHAI, CHINA

R. NADAL/I. Ljubicic
3-6, 6-3, Ret.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Tonight was a good test of character for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, yeah, it was tough, no? It was a very difficult match. I started the first two games playing unbelievable, playing really well. First game I was unlucky because I don't convert the break. I play two very good forehand down-the-line winners.
I had a very good passing shot, but he played good volley, drop volley, very difficult. Well, after that, you know, when you play against one player like Ljubicic with big serve, he start serving so-so, but after the break was very difficult to return, no?
He was serving very hard and putting a lot of first serves inside. Yeah, it was difficult match. I was lucky after the first set with Love-40, but I play well the two points, so that was very important. And down a breakpoint I go into the net. I had volley, cross-volley winner, so that's the point of the match.
Later, sure, I sorry for him, never nice win like this. I know how tough it is, have to retire during a match. I just wish him fast recovery.

Q. Were you worried after the first set? Were you worried that you could lose? You could be going home?
RAFAEL NADAL: If I no worried, probably I am crazy, no? Having 1-1 and Love-40.

Q. Tomorrow semifinal you will versus your good friend Feliciano, and Feliciano is also good at maybe big serve and also good at the volley. How will you face him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Always the same, no? These kind of matches are very difficult always, because you don't have a lot of rhythm. When you are serving, you are all the time under pressure, no? Because they serve well like Ljubicic did today or like Feliciano is doing. I saw him, he play with more aces on the tournament, so he gonna serve well.
So, sure, all the points going to be very important. I have to be very concentrated with my serve all the time, and later we will see what's happened. I try to play aggressive when I have the chances on the return and hope, wait a little bit when he has to play a little bit more with second serves, no?

Q. Tonight and yesterday you played some amazing shots from impossible situations. Do you sometimes surprise yourself when you play these shots and you think, gee, that was -- and you're quite surprised?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, no? But that's part of my game, so sure, sometimes I surprise myself with some balls. But I know from experience when I am ready, when I am playing well, when I am good physically, I save a lot of balls, difficult balls, and I can have this extra, no, with the passing shots, and that's very important on my game, no? It's very important be healthy to play these shots, but sure, be healthy and playing well. If not, is impossible.

Q. Do you think you have a lot of energy saved as you were off the court for several months this season?
RAFAEL NADAL: I played a lot of matches. That's true, no? I wasn't playing for a few times, but anyway, I don't know how many matches I have to this year, but I think I am one of the most, one of the player with one of the most matches, no?
That's because I play -- I was playing unbelievable the first five months of the season and playing a lot of matches, not because I played a lot of tournaments. It's because I arrive all the time, so I don't know if I have a lot of energy.
I hope, yes, because right now I am with a lot of illusion, a lot of motivation for this end of the season, and I'm working hard every day. And every win, every victory is really important. Makes me feel very happy, no? Because I had a hard time, difficult time at home, and when you are here and when you see I am in semifinals is very good. I'm very happy for that.
