Novak Djokovic beats Rafael Nadal to win Italian Open in Rome

Novak Djokovic won his third Italian Open title and laid down a marker for the French Open with victory over Rafael Nadal in the Rome final.
Djokovic, 26, beat the defending champion and world number one 4-6 6-3 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes.
The Serb has now won three matches in a row against Nadal, and has been victorious at five of the last six ATP Masters 1000 events.

This year's French Open, where Nadal is eight-time champion, begins on Sunday.
Despite his daunting record in Paris, and last year's dramatic semi-final win over Djokovic, the Spaniard might not return to Roland Garros as favourite.
It is the first time since 2004 that Nadal, who was beaten in the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Barcelona, has lost more than two matches on clay in a season.
"I was able to find positive things during the tournament but I played three very tough matches this week and it was very hard mentally, as well as physically," said Nadal
"I was a little bit tired."
Djokovic said the victory had come at the end of an emotional week following severe flooding in his home country which has left at least 35 dead and forced tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.
"People are struggling, people are losing homes," he said. "There has been a lot of casualties, but the government is not able to name and to number because they are still discovering new bodies as the flood is backing up.
"So it's been a very emotional week for me. Part of me is very happy to win the tournament here in Rome - it is a big one in our sport. On the other hand, my thoughts and all my love is with my people in Serbia."
Djokovic made an edgy start to the final and slipped two breaks down at 4-1 but, once he found his range, it was the Serb who began to dictate.
Nadal, 27, recovered from 0-40 on his way to closing out the first set but the momentum was with Djokovic and, although he dropped serve when distracted by a crying baby in the crowd, he broke twice to level the match.

A scintillating passage of play saw Djokovic reel off five games in a row, his return of serve causing Nadal all sorts of problems as he broke early in the decider.
Nadal battled hard to stay in touch, punching his fist and roaring to the crowd after holding serve at one point, and his fighting spirit paid off when he got back on level terms at 3-3.
It only sparked another barrage of brilliant returning from Djokovic, however, and the six-time Grand Slam champion broke once more in the following game, matching Nadal with a huge fist pump of his own.
There was no stopping Djokovic now and he dismantled the Nadal serve for the sixth time to seal victory - only his fourth against Nadal in 17 matches on clay.

Djokovic s'offre Nadal

Milos Raonic, Rafael Nadal to clash in Sony Open quarters

Canadian making first career appearance in Key Biscayne quarter-finals

Canadian Milos Raonic knows what fuelled the 100th hardcourt victory of his professional career.
The 23-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., defeated Germany's Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday in the fourth round of the Sony Open in just 89 minutes.
"It was good Timbits," joked Raonic.
He then explained that his goal was to advance to the quarter-finals of the Sony Open, a tournament he had struggled in in the past two years.
"I think that is a bonus on getting the win, which was the main focus," said Raonic of his 100th hardcourt victory.
Raonic will play top-seeded Rafael Nadal, who downed 14th-seeded Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2. Nadal has dropped a total of nine games in six sets so far in this tournament.
Nadal has won all four matches he's had with Raonic.
"When he gets ahead in the points he's difficult to keep up with," said Raonic. "I have to get ahead in the points early and stay ahead. And obviously serving, as well, is going to be key.
"I think the biggest difficulty of playing Rafa is there is really nobody that plays like him, so whenever you come up against him in the tournament it's quite different."
On Tuesday, Raonic was frustrated on his first two match point chances in the final game as he tried to end the contest with a break of Becker's serve.
But Becker thwarted the 12th seed on both winning occasions thanks to Raonic errors.
Raonic went back to work, setting up another match-winner with an overhead from deep in the backcourt only to have Becker save it. Raonic finally claimed victory after a second set which lasted one hour.
"I was not losing any points on my serve pretty much, but I was not dealing with it the right way when he was getting a few returns back in play," said Raonic.
Reaching the quarter-finals was a breakthrough for Raonic, who has stalled at the third round at the last two Sony Opens.
He had to withdraw with strep throat at last year's edition after going out injured the year before in a walkover to Andy Murray.
Despite landing heavily on his left leg and wearing kinesio tape on much of his back, Raonic insisted he is not suffering physically.
"The are just really, really minor things that are little nicks, but nothing that affects me in any way," he said.

Rafael Nadal and Other Poker-Playing Sports Stars Auction Off Footwear for Charity

Poker is consistently lauded as a game that appeals to a wide variety of folks, from weekend grinders to international sports stars. Recently, more and more of these sports heroes have taken to the felt in major tournaments to showcase their skills. Among the athletes who have made their presence known in the poker world include former Manchester United, Tottenham, and England striker Teddy Sheringham; Spanish football sensation Gerard Pique; golfer Sergio Garcia; and tennis superstar Rafael Nadal.
All of those well-known athletes have all recently pitched in with a charity group called the Small Steps Project in an attempt to raise funds to help impoverished children around the world. Each athlete has donated signed footwear to the charity, which is currently being auctioned off online.
The footwear currently up for auction is as follows:
While each of these athletes are famous for excelling in their respective sports, each has produced results within the poker world as well. In 2012, Garcia made a deep run in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event where he ultimately finished in 51st place for $35,000. Sheringham has also found success on the European Poker Tour, as back in 2010 he managed to find a seat at the final table of the EPT Vilamoura Main Event. He was unable to score the title, but his impressive fifth-place finish scored him €93,121 ($118,347) in prize money.
Pique made a splash recently in Barcelona. The footballer participated in the first stop of the EPT's 10th season and walked away with a notable cash. Pique rose above a good chunk of poker's elite in the €10,000 High Roller event where he scored a 19th place finish worth €21,150 ($28,292) in prize money.
Meanwhile, Nadal will make his live tournament debut in just a few days when he vies for poker glory at EPT Prague.
The auctions for these esteemed players' footwear are currently running on eBay. The auctions will close Dec. 15, so if you wish to own the memorabilia from these athlete's careers, acting fast would be a wise option. The auctions are not just limited to sports stars who play poker, either, as the auction's main page will tell you. Kate Moss, Kelly Osbourne, Emma Watson, Natalie Portman, Ben Stiller, and Taylor Swift are just a few of the celebrities whose footwear is also up for grabs.
The Small Steps Celebrity Shoe Auction is the biggest celebrity shoe auction in the world. Through this project, the most famous stars in the world are helping to raise funds to help impoverished children in areas of need. Bidding on these shoes can make you a part of this process as well. An astounding 100% of the funds raised will go directly to the charity thanks to eBay Giving Works.

The 50 Coolest Guys Of 2013

If you think you've seen group warfare when huddled around your consoles, talking football in the pub or arguing about why so and so is much better than whatisname, then you should have joined us when it came to collating this list.

It would be easy to just pick 50 cool blokes based on status, irrespective of whether they've been on the slide for years (Snoop Dogg, Johnny Depp, we're looking at you) but what we sought to find out was who are the 50 coolest blokes of this year.

Nostrils were flared, pencils thrown, hissy fits became the new black and we almost had to have an arm wrestling competition to decide the top 5. Alongside their fashion chops, we've taken in success, cultural impact, not giving a damn about what people think, wingman factor and more. Hope you like it...

And Rafa made the list of course at number...
31. Rafael Nadal, Tennis Player

Following an injury hit 2012, Rafael Nadal started the year by pulling out of the Australian Open and dropped out of the World Top Four for the first time since 2005. With knees made of glass, the swashbuckling left-hander looked to be done as a tennis player. No more exhaustive rallies, no more fist pumps, no more grinding opponents to dust. Luckily, he didn’t believe it, and has gone onto have one of the most successful seasons in men’s tennis history, winning 10 titles, two Grand Slams and finishing the season as World Number One. Bravo...
