Barcelona, December 5, 2009
Spain remains on course to claim their second consecutive Davis Cup title after David Ferrer came back from two sets down to beat Radek Stepanek and leave the hosts 2-0 up on Friday.
FIRST UP, RAFA
Rafa Nadal made a thrilling return to form to beat Tomas Berdych 7-5 6-0 6-2 and give Spain a 1-0 lead over Czech Republic in the Davis Cup final on Friday.
Rafa was two points from losing the first set but edged it and then hit top form to win in two hours 28 minutes.
Berdych had his chances in the first set of the opening singles rubber but could not capitalise from 5-4, 0-30, and Rafa eventually found his feet on his favoured slow clay.
The six-time Grand Slam champion stormed through 13 games in a row as he took charge to the delight of the packed crowd at the Palau Sant Jordi.
DAVIS PUTS SPAIN IN 'POLE POSITION'
David Ferrer produced an epic comeback to beat Radek Stepanek in five sets, 1-6 2-6 6-4 6-4 8-6, to put Spain one win away from victory.
Ferrer had looked a beaten man at two sets and a break down but he came storming back (inspired by his home crowd), in a heroic performance that lasted four hours and 17 minutes.
SATURDAY ORDER OF PLAY – Play starts at 1600 (1500 GMT)
Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil will 100 percent change his doubles nomination from rookies Lukas Dlouhy and Jan Hajek to the Berdych-Stepanek experience for today's crucial match, but it all depends on how quickly Stepanek can recover from yesterday’s physically – and mentally – damaging match.
Whoever is chosen at the end will be facing Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.
