ATP World Finals: Rafael Nadal eases past David Ferrer
Rafael Nadal made a winning return to the O2 Arena after two years
away as he beat David Ferrer in his opening match at the ATP World Tour
Finals.

Nadal, 27, joins Stanislas Wawrinka at the top of Group A,
ahead of Ferrer and Tomas Berdych.
Novak Djokovic takes on Roger Federer
in Group B at 20:00 GMT.
Nadal will secure the year-end number one ranking with one more win this week, an incredible achievement having only returned from a seven-month injury break in February.
The knee problem kept him away from the season finale last year, and his large fan base among the near 17,000 spectators was clearly thrilled to have him back.
"They are never easy games against David Ferrer, the number three in the world," Nadal told BBC Sport. "He is great and having an amazing career.
"He played a lot better than me in Paris last week but today I played a little bit better than him and it's important for my confidence to start with a victory after Paris.
"There is no rest [for tomorrow] but the energy of this stadium is fantastic and hopefully I am ready for tomorrow against Stanislas Wawrinka."
Ferrer had scored a surprise win over the 13-time Grand Slam champion in Paris only three days earlier, but there was no danger of a repeat performance in London.
"There were just too many unforced errors from Ferrer. He gave it everything, but Nadal just had too much for him."
The world number three admitted before the match that
he was feeling the affects of his best-ever season,
and the normally reliable baseliner made far more errors than usual.
Despite recovering an early break of serve, Ferrer's
forehand was especially shaky, and he found the tram lines in game five
to drop behind for a second time.
Nadal was in front without hitting anything like top gear, but he raced across the baseline to hook a brilliant forehand winner up the line on his way to claiming the set with a third break.
After little over half an hour, and with the match now firmly under his control, the French and US Open champion began to find his range.
Ferrer, 30, was barely winning one in four points behind his first serve as Nadal powered through the second set on a run of seven straight games.
There was a late rally from Ferrer, who got a break back when he caught out his opponent at the net, but a 19th forehand error of the afternoon gave Nadal victory on his second match point.
Asked what had made the difference so soon after losing to Ferrer in Paris, Nadal said: "Probably he arrived a little bit more tired after playing the final there. There was not a lot of time to adapt, the court is a little bit slower.
"I played with a little bit more calm than the other day. And, in my opinion, he didn't have the chance to hit the winners as easy as he did three days ago."

Nadal breezes past Ferrer at ATP Finals
Despite his easy win, playing indoors will never be ideal for Nadal. The Spaniard has won all four Grand Slam tournaments and the Olympic title in his career but has never triumphed at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.
“I like the sunshine,” Nadal said when asked about the difference between playing indoors and outdoors after crushing Ferrer.
“The feeling on the ball, on your racket, is different” when playing indoors, Nadal said. “All of these small things that make you feel a little bit strange.”
The conditions didn’t seem to bother him Tuesday as he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2 on the indoor court at London’s O2 arena.
“I’m happy. The court is in perfect condition here,” Nadal said. “It’s a good start for me, positive one.”
Nadal came close to winning the event in 2010 when he lost in the final to Federer. He didn’t play last year because of a knee injury that kept him away for seven months before his successful comeback in February.
The 13-time Grand Slam champion traded early breaks with Ferrer and then began dictating play from the baseline, forcing Ferrer into errors. Nadal converted six of seven break points, while Ferrer had 33 unforced errors.
“He arrived a little bit tired after playing the final (in Paris),” Nadal said. “I played with a little more calm than the other day (against him).”
Nadal claimed his 21st win in 26 matches against Ferrer, but only his first indoors.
Nadal and Ferrer play in Group A, along with Stanislas Wawrinka, who beat Tomas Berdych in his opening match on Monday. Djokovic and Federer are in Group B with Juan Martin del Potro and Richard Gasquet.

Rafael Nadal considers 2013 a ‘sensational’ year after comeback from knee injury, with or without No. 1 ranking
LONDON — Despite all of his success this year, Rafael Nadal still hasn’t sewn up the year-end No. 1 ranking. At this stage in his career, though, that hardly even matters anymore.
After coming back from a career-threatening knee injury to capture 10 titles this year — including two Grand Slams — Nadal has already exceeded almost everyone’s expectations in 2013. He also overtook Novak Djokovic for the No. 1 ranking last month, although the Serb has a chance to win it back this week at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals.
Regardless of what happens in London, Nadal will consider the year a massive success.
“I’ve already finished the year as the World No. 1 [before],” said Nadal, who finished on top in 2008 and 2010. “If it happens again, it will be perfect, but the story of my season is not the No. 1 spot. The story is that I was able to come back, to win and to be competitive again in a short spell of time.”
Since returning from a left knee injury that sidelined him for seven months, the 27-year-old Spaniard has reached the final of 13 of the 15 tournaments he’s this season, winning the French Open and U.S. Open along the way.
He needs to win just two matches in London to clinch the No. 1 spot while Djokovic must win the tournament to have a chance.
“I had a sensational season and I would not [trade] all the emotions I went through [for] being the No. 1,” Nadal said ahead of his first round robin match against fellow Spaniard David Ferrer on Tuesday.
The London tournament, which brings together the eight best players of the season, is the only major title still missing from Nadal’s collection of trophies.
Nadal qualified for the event for the ninth straight year but his best result in the event is a runner-up finish in 2010.
Drinking a milk-shake and smiling at the start of his news conference, Nadal’s mood darkened when he was asked about his failure to win the indoor tournament.

But Nadal, widely considered the best clay-court player in the history of the game, doesn’t expect to see the event played on another surface before the end of his career.
“I say it for the next generation and because it would be interesting for the fans,” he said. “This is a great place to play, I have never been to a tournament with a better atmosphere, but that doesn’t mean the ATP can’t be a little bit more fair with the players.”
